Beyond MIDI: The Handbook of Musical Codes by Eleanor Selfridge-Field,

Beyond MIDI: The Handbook of Musical Codes by Eleanor Selfridge-Field,
The establishment of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (Midi) in the late 1980s allowed hobbyists and musicians to experiment with sound control in ways that previously had been possible only in research studios. Midi is now the most prevalent representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Programs that support sound input for graphics output necessarily span a gamut of representational categories. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the musical work. Thus, for those involved in pedagogy, analysis, simulation, notation, and music theory, the nature of the representation matters a great deal. An understanding of the data requirements of different applications is fundamental to the creation of interchange codes. The contributors to Beyond Midi present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music representation. Generally, each chapter describes the history and intended purposes of the code, a description of the representation of the primary attributes of music (pitch, duration, articulation, ornamentation, dynamics, and timbre), a description of the file organization, some mention of existing data in the format, resources for further information, and at least one encoded example. The book also shows how intended applications influence the kinds of musical information that are encoded.

Music Business Primer by Diane Sward Rapaport,
Music Business Primer by Diane Sward Rapaport,
New, from the author of "How to Make and Sell Your Own Recording"--the book that revolutionized the recording industry! "A Music Business Primer" explores the ecology of the music industry. The symbiotic partnership between music businesses and the creativity and talent of musicians and performers is clearly described, for without the contributions of both, there is no music industry. "A Music Business Primer" contains chapters on how the business works, synopses of controversial industry lawsuits and incisive interviews with influential entrepreneurs such as Peter Gotcher, cofounder of Digidesign; Will Ackerman, cofounder of Windham Hill Records; and Wendy Day, founder of Rap Coalition. The music industry is in a state of flux. Artists, nonprofit associations and industry businesspeople are challenging many of the provisions in major label recording contracts and those marketing and sales practices that choke consumer access to recordings and competition from independent labels. Free file sharing challenges all music businesses to find methods to satisfy the demands of the public for music without destroying the basic principle of copyright law: artists should be paid for their creative works. All of these issues and more are explored in "A Music Business Primer.

Allegro library - The Allegro library is a free video game software library, with functions for basic 2D graphics, image manipulation, text output, audio output, midi music, input and timers, as well as additional routines for things like fixed-point and floating-point matrix arithmetic, unicode strings, file system access, file manipulation, datafiles, and (limited, software-only) 3D graphics. As of version 4.

Extensible Music Format (XMF) - The Extensible Music Format (XMF) is a family of music-related file formats created and administered by the MIDI Manufacturer's Association. XMF is based on the idea of containing one or more files in existing formats – such as Standard MIDI Files, DLS instrument files, WAV or other digital audio files, etc.

Open Music Model - The Open Music Model is an economic and technological framework for the recording industry proposed in 2003, which suggests that the only viable system for distributing music online is through a DRM-free peer-to-peer file sharing system. It is based on earlier research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Anvil Studio - Anvil Studio is a free MIDI music composition program by Willow Software. Optional accessories can be purchased that add features such as the ability to print composed music as sheet music or to record up to eight audio tracks that can accompany MIDI music.

A synthesizer (spelling var. Synthesizer The term "synthesiser" is also used to mean frequency synthesiser, an electronic system found in communications. Each of these stages is modelled by a change in volume (typically exponential). Synthesizers create sounds through direct manipulation of discrete values using computers (as in analog synthesizers), mathematical manipulation of electrical currents (as in analog synthesizers), mathematical manipulation of electrical currents are used to cause vibrations in the diaphragms of loudspeakers, headphones, etc. This synthesized sound is its amplitude envelope.
